This blog will be updated daily with writings and media that express some of my views regarding life and existence as human beings, including a biweekly report called Biography of a Revolution on figures in our culture that have influenced or revolutionized society through music, art and writing.

Woody Guthrie

In Biography of a Revolution

Biography of a Revolution is on a winter hiatus, gathering inspirations for new reports to be released in the spring. For now, enjoy reading, viewing and listening to all the super stars we’ve covered so far, and please send us any input you have on subject matter. Enjoy!

Woody Guthrie

Guthrie was tired of the radio overplaying Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America”. He thought the lyrics were unrealistic and complacent. Partly inspired by his experiences during a cross-country trip and his distaste for God Bless America, he penned “This Land Is Your Land”, in February 1940; it was subtitled “God Blessed America.”

“I could hire out to the other side, the big money side, and get several dollars every week just to quit singing my own kind of songs and to sing the kind that knock you down still farther and the ones that poke fun at you even more and the ones that make you think that you’ve not got any sense at all. But I decided a long time ago that I’d starve to death before I’d sing any such songs as that. The radio waves and your movies and your jukeboxes and your songbooks are already loaded down and running over with such no good songs as that anyhow.”

A Word on Content

Though there are many essays on this blog, I personally do not see myself as any great writer, per say. They simply express forthrightly and openly my views and experiences with various aspects of life. It is up to you how you would like to take these sharings. My suggestion is to stay focused simply on what the offerings evoke in you, in your experience, and what you can learn about yourself in the process – as opposed to focusing on any judgments or interpretations about who I am as a person (which would be speculative and unsubstantiated at best). If you disagree – so be it. I’m sure the way you focus and discern your experience is veritable unto itself, and I want to honor that. It is possible that that honor can be mutual so that we can all grow together in the harmony of our dynamic expression. The intention behind the sharing is to be as real and as authentic as possible to my own, genuine human expression and what is moving in me moment to moment. I am personally not concerned with any offense that anyone may have, as it is understood that your experience is about you and actually has essentially nothing to do with me. I am, although, highly interested in your journey and would love to hear about what comes up for you in response to what has been shared. ENJOY – John.
